What Sacred Connections IS
Sacred Connections is basically a community of people sharing an interest in sacred sexuality, personal & spiritual growth, and community building. Most members live in or near the greater San Francisco Bay area, though we have other members around the country. Our connections are nurtured through group gatherings (also in the SF Bay area) and a rich network of individual friendships and relationships.
You can get a good idea of our direction and intention from our Vision Statement, and from the Covenant we each agree to, both available on this website.
Sacred Connections by intent grows slowly as a network of close friends. Existing members must sponsor potential new members as "guests", after which most guests are invited to become members in their own right, if both they and we feel there is a good match.
You can find out more about membership, including sponsorship of guests, through this website.
We have two kinds of events and two corresponding leadership groups
- One Day Events are typically held from early afternoon into evening, somewhere in the Bay Area, and are usually open to all general members and their guests. The event ends with a potluck and socializing. These events are normally the first step for those living near the Bay Area. Each event is led by a one-time Event Team, drawn from a pool of leaders developed over the years.
- Celebrations of Sacred Sexuality are multi-day retreat-style catered residential events held in appropriate resorts in Northern California. Typically there is one Celebration in the Spring (3 days/2 nights) and one in the Fall (4 days/3 nights). Most but not all general members eventually attend Celebrations. Celebrations are led by the "Core Team" with support each time from various other leaders.
We have been around since 1998, and many of our members have known each other for years. (We used to be called "Millennial Connections") We also have a good number of new members every year, and we welcome them warmly.
And on the flip side:
What Sacred Connections IS NOT
- We are not a school, and our events are not "workshops". We have nothing against schools and workshops, and in fact many of us attend of lot of them, or even present them; but we are more of a community of peers. We have no "staff" in the sense that most workshops do.
- We are not a "discussion group". Our events are experiential, with rituals and exercises in areas of sensuality, spirituality, growth, communication, and playfulness (among other things). Of course we also talk and share with words as a vital part of that, but our emphasis is not on abstractions.
- We are not a sex party. We are sexually open as part of our vision, but our main orientation it towards heartful, loving intimacy within an ongoing community of sex and spirit. Many (most?) of us are selectively polyamorous. This is not a good place to try to simply get laid; it's a good place to work on becoming more authentic - and have fun, too.
- We are not led by a guru or teacher. We are a community of peers, sharing our individual learnings and hearts to create a greater wholeness. We have leaders who organize events, but they are not responsible for "teaching" us, they don't need to know more than the rest of us, and they do not tell us how to practice. Each of us takes full responsiblity for ourselves.
- We are not (just) a Tantra group. We embrace many paths to sacred sexuality, both established and individual. Of course, the sacred sexual teachings of Tantra, Taoism, neopaganism, Quodoshka, and other paths are welcome within this mixture.
- We are not commercial. This is an all volunteer community organized not-for-profit. We keep things as affordable as possible.
- We are not a good place to bring a date, or out of town guests. All who attend are members, or sponsored as potential members. One key element of community is ongoing contact which builds trust and depth.
